To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the publication of the first part of Jaroslav Hasek's satiric novel The Good Soldier Svejk in 1921, readers across the globe – actors, translators, scholars, students, and other friends of Czech culture – will take turns reading. Vaclav Paris, Professor of Comparative Literature at City College, will provide a brief introduction. Christopher Harwood, Lecturer in Czech at Columbia University, will moderate the event.

Did you know that The Good Soldier Svejk is the most translated Czech novel? Joseph Heller said that if he had not read it, he would never have written Catch-22.

The online reading will continue until the end of Part One, whenever that may be.  Reading locations will include New York, Prague, London, Rome, Istanbul, Uppsala, Salalah in Oman, Los Angeles, Chicago, and others.
